A somewhat tired and exhausted 1930’s classroom block was earmarked to house WelTec’s new School of Arts + Media
Teaching zones abutt generous social spaces that students can claim as their own and which act as a fulcrum for social exchange.
A sculpture court and gallery flank the student lounge, which also doubles as informal function, exhibition and teaching space.
A new central lift tower addresses vertical circulation issues, with ramped steel bridges linking disparate floor levels in opposing wings of the building. The tower provides a highway for both circulation and services to all levels.
A simple material palette injected by strong colour acknowledges the building’s history as a once trade and engineering school.
