St ORANS GYMNASIUM
NZIA Regional Award 2004

Situated on a tight and constrained site, this new gymnasium has been crafted to respect the adjoining established residential neighbourhood.

The building nestles amongst disparate teaching blocks, preserving open green space and minimising visual impact. The entry forms an edge to a central, student focused sun court to create a nodal social space between four school blocks.

A common foyer links an existing Performing Arts Centre. Upper level classroom space and a gallery also form part of the complex.

Large windows provide natural light and achieve visual connection to the adjoining field and other school facilities. Concrete block, glass and exposed structural steel provide a durable, cost effective and pragmatic solution. A simple, yet strong colour palette was selected to off set natural material finishes.
